Bastards of Earle

Sweet grit and crumbling heartworn sonic decay…

A life at Walden Pond may bring peace, but it sure don’t get the girls shaking!

Hey Ho, Bastards and Bastardettes!

The sun is here!  No more tricks or tomfoolery, I don’t think my poor heart can take it.  Either you’re here to stay or just don’t come at all.  But since you’re here, pull up a chair, have a glass of wine and stay awhile!

So many things to report and many apologies for my silence as of late.  But, first things first:   Bastards of Earle is no longer a solo project!  It’s grown exponentially, like lichens on stone, like mold on that sandwich you left in the back of the fridge for weeks.  You meant to eat it, but after awhile, you kept opening the fridge and there always seemed like something better to eat.  Until finally, it was way too far gone to save…but, I digress!

Bastards of Earle is a full band:   I’ve placed the acoustic aside for the moment and we’re now an all-electric band:  the twins, Brett and Bart Riley on bass and drums, respectively and Hank Foreman on guitar and backing vocals.  In the short time we’ve been playing, the music is really coming together and I’d love for everyone to check out what we’ve been putting together.  Really proud to hear the little ditties I penned in my bedroom come roaring to life!

And…we’ve just  recorded our first single/demo!  We spent some time with Vincent Corvino at Forge Recording and under his capable tutelage, we came out with something great!  Take a listen to ‘Black Heart':

With summer finally here, it’s Festival time!  To start things off, we’re playing this weekend, Saturday 5/17, as part of one of my favorite Philly Fests–Trenton Avenue Arts Festival.  The festival is located on Trenton Ave. in Fishtown, near it’s intersection with E. Susquehanna.  It’s basically just off Frankford Avenue, about 5-6 blocks north of Girard Avenue.  It’s a fantastic festival…come early, around noon, for the Kinetic Sculpture Derby, where people build incredible and crazy (and functional) bike sculptures and end up in a pit of mud!  Yeah, it’s as weird and cool as it sounds.  Then, the rest of the day is filled with music and art.  Bastards of Earle go on stage at 6 PM sharp!!!

Later this month, we will also be appearing at the Sundrop Music and Arts Festival, The Fire’s annual outdoor music and arts fest, on Sunday, 5/25 (day before Memorial Day).  The Festival is located just outside the venerable Philly venue, The Fire and we go on at 5:00 PM sharp, outside.

So, that’s the skinny!  Would love to see everyone out this month!  Get out of the house, get into your seersucker suits and have some fun…and support your local rock ‘n’ rollers!

Ho Ho,

Papa Bastard

We can tolerate the Cold, we can deal with weak coffee but we just can't live without Rock 'n' Roll!!

Hey Ho, Bastards and Bastardettes!

The snow is upon us and the cold has descended upon Philadelphia like Santa Claus on a plate of Christmas cookies.  We all know Dad really ate the cookies, but there’s always that small possibility, that faint glimmer of hope, that Jolly Old St. Nick really was there.  In these troubled times, amongst the mounds of snow that pile up at our doorsteps, a little bit of hope goes a long way.  And the New Year is here!  It’s shining as bright as a copper penny fresh outta’ the Franklin Mint…

This weekend, I am the headlining act at two venues in Philadelphia:  1) Friday, 1/24 at Connie’s Ric-Rac (S. Philly) and 2) Saturday, 1/25 at The M-Room (Fishtown).  Even got some great press for Saturday’s show!!  Jump Philly, a very cool local Music Mag, said I was the show to see this Saturday night!!

Check it out:  http://jumpphilly.com/2014/01/21/intern-derricks-weekend-picks-going-local/

Not bad…well, this is what they said:

A veteran of the local music scene, Philadelphia native, Todd Zamostien, is the sole driving force behind the alternative, folk and country-tinged, Bastards of Earle.   Along with a diverse array of musical artists, many of Zamostien’s influences come from the sights and sounds of the city we know and love.   Calming and introspective, Bastards of Earle is a must-see.”

So, that’s that!  Sitting here in the afterglow, I can almost feel the snow melting at my feet.  Post-snowfall, post-partum blues be gone!  It’s time to rock ‘n’ roll and I won’t take “NO” for an answer…

Hope to see you cats out this weekend!  And check out the website…buy a t-shirt or two, it’s cold out there and it’s all about layers.

Website is up and ready for business!

I couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome this baby into the world!  Chock full ‘o content…pics, video, live and studio tracks, she is truly a sight to behold!  A big thanks to Melissa Alam of Veritas Creative Studio (http://veritascreativestudio.com/)…using her coding talents to piece it all together.  She is a gem.  Honestly, so many people to thank so far, so many great artists that I’ve been able to work with in this short time:  Joshua Mallory of Noise Soul Cinema (http://noisesoulcinema.com/) created the music video, Eric and Ben of Elevate Sound Studios (http://www.elevatesound.com/) recorded the acoustic version of “Downtown Girl”, Marco Roldan took the front page photos, John Falco of Falco Media Services designed the logo, Fireball Printing (http://fireballprinting.com/) made the posters, Ryan Bleaken of Rising Sun Sound and Film recorded the live North Star tracks, Philly Band Merch (http://phillybandmerch.com/) made the buttons.  The list goes on and on…it is amazing how much needs to get done and how important every artist is and how utterly crucial each of their talents is in the creation of one song, one video, one website.  All creative love shared amongst artists working together to create a supportive and thriving scene here in Philly!  I even bribed my favorite Philly rock ‘n’ rollers, John & Brittany, in order to get them to pose in Bastards of Earle t-shirts…they got t-shirts, I got a pic of Brittany’s day-glo pink hair on my website.  No question, I came out ahead!

So…if you got this far, check out the page and tell me what you think.  Here at Bastards of Earle, we’re only here to serve and as I always say…the customer is always right!

But today was a good day…wrote a new song called “Transistor Radio”.  So far, I love it…but we’ll see how it fares in the war against time.  There’s always another song trying to take its place, but some have staying power.  It’s a song about my friend and bandmate in NLMS, Jamie Olson–a man out of time, happy to spin his vinyl while the kids come and go.  He’s a man that writes songs for the right reasons, loves for the right reasons and has taught me greatly.  “Let them have their shiny phone.  I’ve got my records, got my own…Transistor Radio”.  Play it high and lonesome, Mr. Olson!  I’ll try it out tonight (it’s already 3:30 AM, so we’re onto tomorrow already)…got a cool show with another local musician I admire greatly, Eric13.  That man is truly a force of nature–a self-contained rock ‘n’ roll tornado!  You can’t stop him, you just stand aside and hope your house doesn’t get ripped from its foundation.

So, while our feet are still on the ground, let’s hit the rack!  Night everyone…

I’m turning 35 and it’s gonna be a weekend-long celebration! On Friday, 12/20…I am playing Fergie’s Happy Hour from 6-8 pm. Instead of taking all the glory, I thought the perfect way to celebrate my 35th would be to have all my friends (who just happen to be great musicians) come and join me…relax and play a few songs!
